Dr. Miriam Furlong's practice is limited to the dental specialty of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics for children, adolescents and adults. Only dentists who have completed advanced specialty education programs may call themselves orthodontists.
Dr. Miriam T. Furlong was raised in Jackson, New Jersey and attended the public school system from kindergarten through high school. She attended Georgian Court University from 1987 through 1990 with a biochemistry major and chemistry minor. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree. From 1991 through 1995, Dr. Furlong attended New Jersey Dental School at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (U.M.D.N.J.) in Newark with an academic scholarship. She graduated with honors and received her Doctorate of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.). Dr. Furlong immediately continued her post-graduate education at Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York to specialize in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Her three-year residency program included treating patients from the Center for Craniofacial Disorders, as well as coordinating complex orthognathic surgery cases. She won resident-division awards at the annual American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) conventions in 1997 and 1998 for the work she presented. In 1998, Dr. Furlong completed requirements established by the AAO to become certified as a specialist in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.
To keep up to date on the advances in the field of dentistry, Dr. Furlong attends continuing education courses and conferences regularly. She is trained and experienced in using the best orthodontic treatment techniques, including the latest cutting-edge technology as well as more traditional methods. She is certified in the Tip-Edge Differential Straight-Arch Technique (a light-force system of small dimension braces), and she has been Invisalign certified since 2001. Dr. Furlong treats patients of all ages and understands that people have very different needs and expectations about treatment. Her educational background and expertise in using a wide variety of treatment techniques allow her to provide the best care that suits each patient’s lifestyle.
Dr. Furlong makes it a priority to keep in contact with fellow dental professionals and believes that open communication is essential in caring for mutual patients. She is a member of the American Dental Association (ADA) as well as the AAO, and she maintains professional affiliations with her local constituent societies. She attends meetings and courses with her peers on a regular basis, and she corresponds with every dental healthcare professional with whom she treats patients.
As a local healthcare professional and resident, Dr. Furlong believes in getting involved with the people of the community to make a positive impact. She supports local charities and organizations through donation of money, supplies and services. She visits local schools to give presentations and invites students and youth groups to come to her office to learn more about orthodontics. To encourage growth for fellow small business owners, Dr. Furlong utilizes the goods and services of local businesses and is a member of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Furlong resides locally with her husband and high school sweetheart, Michael. They have two children, and they make family time a priority. Dr. Furlong and her husband are both fitness enthusiasts, and she has maintained a second career as a professional fitness instructor since 1986. In her spare time, Dr. Furlong enjoys fine dining, dancing, shopping and home decorating.
